Statistics in Service to the Nation

Abstract

Statistics has played an important role, not only within universities at the interface with other fields but  also well beyond the boundaries of the university. I will describe some of these broader contributions linked to my own statistical activities in support of national-level investigations and projects requiring statistical insights and rigor. Big problems, especially those confronting the nation, almost always have a statistical component and working on these can be rewarding, both personally and professionally.
