Title

Statistical Design and Analysis for Evaluating Fuel Effects on Advanced Combustion Engines

Speaker

John Orban, Battelle

Abstract

New environmental regulations present challenges to fuel blenders, engine manufactures, and engine technology suppliers to develop combinations of fuels, engines, and control technologies that can achieve stringent limits on engine emissions such as total particulate matter (TPM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). In order to avoid the use of expensive emission control technologies (e.g., catalysts and filters), engine manufactures are developing advanced combustion technologies such as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). This technology, which requires the use of advanced control systems, has the potential to significantly reduce harmful emissions; but, the performance and emissions characteristics may be sensitive to fuel properties. Many large research projects are planned or underway to study the relationships between fuel properties and engine performance characteristics. The talk will address methods use to select representative test fuels and discuss plans for analyzing the test data from one of these studies.

Meet the speaker in Room 212 Cockins Hall at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
