Title: Statistical approaches to taxonomy/a taxonomy of statistical approaches
Abstract: What can statistical analysis tell us about the relationships between species? We examine this taxonomy problem and discuss some common approaches. We then form a taxonomy of taxonomy methods, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each. More broadly, we then attempt a taxonomy of all statistical approaches, arguing that instead of focusing on which method is “better” we should consider what tool is best for the job. We also consider alternate frameworks for classifying statistical approaches with an emphasis on teaching and discuss how the speaker’s background has influenced his classroom instruction.
