Andrew Shan named among 2024-2025 Presidential Fellowship recipients

Andrew Shan

The Department of Statistics congratulates Biostatistics PhD student, Andrew Shan, for being named among the 2024-2025 Presidential Fellowship recipients. The Presidential Fellowship is the most prestigious award given by the Graduate School to recognize outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research or terminal degree project.

Andrew Shan is a PhD Biostatistics student. He completed his undergraduate studies here at the Ohio State University majoring in Business Administration before completing his master’s at Case Western Reserve University. Throughout his time at Case Western, he developed a strong interest in statistics and public health research. Today, Andrew’s research and contributions can be found in over 60 peer-reviewed articles and has been cited world-wide, including a proposed rule by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Heart Association, and the CDC’s Surgeon General’s report.

Now returned to his undergraduate alma mater, Andrew is focusing on advancing statistical methods to enhance the analysis of large-scale national longitudinal survey data on women’s health. He is addressing two critical issues in his field- selection bias and variable selection. By using joint modeling techniques, Andrew aims to enhance the validity of study findings, contributing to better health outcomes. In his spare time Andrew enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.

In regard to being awarded the Presidential Fellowship, Andrew Shan said, “Receiving the Presidential Fellowship is a tremendous honor. It recognizes the importance of my research in improving statistical methods for analyzing complex health data, which can ultimately lead to better healthcare interventions for cancer survivors.”

Congratulations Andrew!
