Jonathan Baker celebrates Amgen STEM learning center ribbon cutting
On Oct 2, 2024, OSU staff, students, faculty, and guests joined for the opening ceremony of the Amgen STEM learning center in Ramseyer Hall. The new learning center will provide STEM students with consistent tutoring, seminars, and internship opportunities. Amgen, a growing biotechnical company, donated $2 million to the College of Arts and Sciences and Engineering to foster a stronger STEM environment and to combat the growing demand in the STEM Workforce in central Ohio.
Department of Statistics Jonathan Baker is the Director of the learning center and he expresses his excited about this new opportunity, stating that the center will “focus on at-risk students in gateway STEM classes by providing individualized support.” Currently the Amgen STEM learning center has 4 full-time staff members and over 100 undergraduate peer tutors to aid in this mission.
The new learning center is aimed at strengthening the STEM program at OSU and creating a stronger pipeline to the workforce for OSU students. According to Jonathan Baker, the Amgen STEM learning center will accomplish this by encouraging first- and second-year students early in their education and, in turn, increase graduation rates and their ability to enter the workforce in central Ohio.
The Department of Statistics is thrilled to celebrate with Jonathan, the STEM learning center team, and The Ohio State University in this significant venture.
