Statistics Department Hosts 10th Annual Data Fest

Held April 10–12 in Cockins Hall, the 10th iteration of DataFest brought together undergraduate students from across the university for an intensive weekend of data analysis, collaboration, and innovation. DataFest is a national competition that challenges teams of three to five students to analyze a large, real-world dataset under preset time constraints. Over the course of the weekend, participants work to uncover meaningful insights, develop supportive visualizations, and present their findings, all while navigating the complexities of significant data. The event emphasizes not only technical analysis, but also critical thinking, effective communication, and data-focused decision-making.

Since its founding at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2011, DataFest has grown into a global initiative sponsored by the American Statistical Association (ASA). It is now hosted by more than 60 universities worldwide, with over 2,000 undergraduate students participating annually between March and May. Each participating institution works with the same dataset, culminating in presentations evaluated for distinctions such as “best visualization” and “best insight.”

A defining feature of DataFest is the open-ended nature of the challenge. Participants are given access only to the dataset, with no prescribed questions or analytical framework. This structure encourages creativity and exploration, allowing teams to pursue diverse approaches—from examining behavioral patterns in consumer data to constructing dynamic visual models that illustrate user interactions. The experience reflects the ambiguity and complexity of real-world data environments that students are likely to encounter in their professional careers.

Throughout the weekend, students benefit from the guidance of faculty members, graduate students and industry mentors who provide support and insight. In addition to technical assistance, mentors offer valuable advice on academic pathways, skill development and professional growth, contributing to a well-rounded learning experience.

Preparation for DataFest begins well in advance of the event itself. In the weeks leading up to the competition, registered students have access to virtual workshops focused on data analytics tools and techniques. Team formation events also provide opportunities for students from different disciplines to connect and build collaborative groups. This interdisciplinary approach is strongly encouraged, as teams benefit from a range of perspectives and skill sets, including computation, domain knowledge and creative design.

Participation in DataFest often inspires students to expand their academic interests and develop new competencies. Many students use the event as a stepping stone into data science, gaining hands-on experience that assists their coursework and informs future academic and career decisions.

Organizing DataFest is a significant undertaking that requires months of preparation. The planning committee, comprising faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and university staff, coordinates logistics such as event space, catering, sponsorship, prizes and the recruitment of mentors and judges. Their efforts work to ensure a seamless and engaging experience for all participants.

As DataFest marks its 10th year at Ohio State, it continues to provide a dynamic and supportive environment where students can engage with real data, build valuable skills, and connect with peers and professionals. The Department of Statistics encourages students from all backgrounds, regardless of prior experience in statistics, to participate in future Data Fests, as all insight is valuable.
