Students of the department were presented with many opportunities to conduct research through assistance awards, resulting in innovative work this year. We are excited to feature three 4th year students, whose work produced such projects in 2024!
Yue Ma

Yue Ma, earning a PhD in Statistics, had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Oksana Chkrebtii on an NSF Hybrid Autonomous Manufaturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER) project. This work involes designing spatial models that incorporate boundary constraints while maintaining the desirable computational properties of Gaussian processes (GPs).
Eric Crislip

Eric Crislip, earning a PhD in Statistics, had the opportunity to collaborate with both Dr. Oksana Chkrebtii and Dr. Mario Peruggia on diagnostics for Gaussian process emulators of expensive computer models. Eric is also part of an Anthropology collaboration focusing on the labor dynamics of native communities in Belize who practice swidden agriculture, a subsistence farming method involving forest land rotation.
Xuerong Wang
Xuerong Wang, earning a PhD in Statistics, had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Yoonkyung Lee and Dr. Kiryung Lee from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on a research project analyzing single-cell RNA sequencing data.
The department is very proud of the research being conducted by its students this year, and expresses its gratitude for contributions to the Development Fund that in part provides opportunities for students to pursue creative and innovative projects through research assistant awards.
