After graduating from the Ohio State University in 1983, Gunnar Steffanson started his career at the Marine Research Institute in Iceland where he provided research and advice to the government regarding how much to fish. Then, Steffanson moved to the University of Iceland, where he developed a system called Smiley Tutor. This system prevents cheating by presenting different questions and changing the difficulty of the questions based on how well the student is performing.
